As of now, Russia, China and the USA have yet to sign the Ottawa treaty that bans the use and production of anti-personnel mines. These countries are also the largest arms dealers.

The aftermath of the Vietnamese War is a great example. As of today, villagers and farmers are still dying from old live mines. I salute to you, brave girl! May many great things come from your hardships!
It isn't even unique to recent conflicts or to stereotypically less-developed countries; only by skin color do we know this takes place in either Asia or South America (probably the latter). Farmers in France and Belgium are STILL digging up not-yet-exploded shells, mines, and poison canisters from World War 1. They dig up 900 tons a year in the Verdun forest alone. A hundred years later, a long-finished war still claims lives.
Didn't Cambodia have some thing a while ago where the estimated number of undiscovered live mines in their country had finally fallen below the population of their capital or something?
Clearly, you guys need to cheer up and read about a true de-mining, former child soldier and all around badass that this little girl must draw inspiration from!!! http://www.badassoftheweek.com/aki-ra.html
