I added the tag straw_hat, though I am sure there is a better word for such hats. Wikipedia says it could be a takuhatsugasa. At least the example looks like it.

Going by tag edits by ghostrigger on earlier images of Myouren, I'd say it's an ajirogasa. That's also what it's called on the Japanese wiki. The English wiki says takuhatsugasa, but since "takuhatsu" means "monk's "begging" ", I assume that's a term describing a wider variety of hats.

It's because these hats are also used as baskets, for offerings. These offerings are mainly of food for the monk. On a side note, those Tengu Hats are also used by some monks (shugendo sect), and their second use is as a drinking cup. Now why isn't this used in pictures?
