It took me a while to realize the kanji was written upside down, so I wasted some time searching for that. Anyway, the kanji on the shield is 歩 (fu). It's short for 歩兵 (fuhyō), "Foot soldier" or "Pawn" in English. Personally I'd have guessed 玉將 (gyokushō), Jeweled General because of the staff.
