The image looks like waterboiled even if I know its deep fried. But boilling sausage must be works too right?
That's what you can do to a vienna frank (meat in a sausage shape, usually red skin here) to make a make-shift hotdog. Full of salt though, but tastes good none the less.

I never cared much for vienna sausages. They are really expensive for how little you get and they are practically tasteless. Maybe it is just the MFG in my area. Although I guess in the apocalypse that is the closest thing you can get to a hot dog. Until the cans run out.
Sausage is nice and all, but nowadays the thing in the Supermarket are heavily stuffed with preservatives for the sake of longer shelf life and other stuffs to make the colour/texture interesting. Haven't seen anything like fresh home made without much additives sausage sold anywhere around here.

When it comes to good sausage, it has to be homemade. Shoot a squirrel or if you live in the city, a little stealth and an airgun can get you enough pidgeon for a week in a couple hours. I met a couple of hobos (Not a bum. I can respect hobos since they don't ask for handouts and do try to earn their place in the world doing whatever work they can find) who got a lot their meals that way when they were especially low on money. They said they would give up everything else since they could improvise, but not the airgun. Of course, the conventional deer is more efficient if you can afford real hunting. Alternatively you can check out local farms who are always more than happy to sell you some meat. Just avoid "organic" or "natural" farms. Biggest load of scammers I have ever met in my life, who wouldn't think twice about fooling you if they think you are some city yuppie with no eye for actual quality foods.
That said, I actually like the high preservative canned foods like SPAM or if you ever heard of it PRIM (BLT in a can). Makes me feel like I am a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Vienna sausage is just the only thing I can't love. No seasoning or something.
