You can. I do that when taking photos using the integrated flash or when I need mobility.

It's not applicable for all lens hoods. Usually on bayonet-style ones, it's possible, but I hate that because I manual focus all the time. Usually I'll stick to a fixed metal hood that's attached via the filter ring.
