Who takes a flying leap into a hot spring anyway? Most people would poke their toe in to measure the temperature before getting in and if the water is boiling hot, that would be a clear visible cue. Plus the place would be full of unbearably hot steam. Worst case scenario would be that nobody got to soak and relax in the onsen, leaving with a scalded big toe.

Well, it could be super-heated distilled water where it doesn't boil despite being well over boiling point because of the absence of impurities to form bubbles off of. Until you toss a Meiling into it, it looks like water, and then it explodes.
