Guns require matainence, one part of that is proper care to clean it out. Shooting a weapon leaves debris and gunk in the barrel, that will gunk up the rifling, making it less accurate. Also, regular wear to the finish that protects the gun from rust, internal buildup of residue and rust on the moving components. If you properly maintain a weapon, you should be able to use the same barrel and mechanics long before their expected lifespan. It also keeps your gun ready to fire, and less likely to jam, miss-fire, or even fall apart and explode!
