I'm pretty sure that's just an excuse, as the blindfold is more metaphoric. (I.E. the characters only take off their blindfolds right as they're receiving some sort of revelation "and suddenly they can see".) The excuse that it's a blindfold is as much an excuse as why gynoids on a planet with no humans need to have perfect female bodies and wear skin-tight clothes. (I mean, she's a gynoid, how much could they put into something the size of a strip of cloth that they couldn't just put into her eyes directly?)
