No matter what, I just can't see the "childish" ones as waifus. Maybe it's just me getting older, but I can only see them as daughters.
That being said, there is a nice package in the shop right now for more rings if you're willing to pay the cat her toll.
I have long wished for an adoption papers instead of rings for KanColle.
But seriously, it does seem like there are more stories nowadays where the token loli character is adopted (either functionally or officially) rather than hinted at being a romantic interest. Maybe I'm just picking up stories for older readers, but it feels like there's more awareness that an older audience would see a little girl more as a duaghteru than waifu.

Yes, for the longest time UchiMusu (For Sake of My Daughter, I'll even Beat the Demon King) was the only LN of this particular sub genre. Nowadays there's like...5? 6? of them currently being translated. All of the newer ones follow almost exact same plot, however, so it's kinda bland.
- Male char, well above 25. - OP/has special skills (reincarnation optional) - Gets kicked by his current party / lost his current job / party disbanded - Wander around finding odd jobs to get money - Saves loli from some kind of incident - Decides to 'adopt' the loli. - Optional: Loli later grows into potential love interest (will only happen if the loli is non-human or the male char is not fully human i.e has longevity and/or youth/immortality)
No matter what will happen afterwards, Ayanami will protect the Commander, yes...
