This happened about 50(?) years ago, so the 70s I think? It was back in 2009 when I heard it, so I don't remember all the details.
Anyways, he was out drinking on the weekend, back when he was still working in industry, until he was blackout drunk. The next morning, on Monday, he woke up in a cozy bed and breakfast out in the countryside. He's thinking, "OK, guess I'll call into work and say I'll be late," and goes to the reception desk to check out and use their phone. As he makes his way down the hall, he starts to notice a few things about the decor that are a bit off and a slow, sinking realization starts to wash over him. When the receptionist greets him, her accent completely sank any hope that he was still in Canada. At this point he awkwardly asks to use their phone.
And that's how he wound up staying with one of his coworker's cousins in Northern England. The most impressive part about it all was that he didn't get fired.
