Have you ever heard the term interceptor, small planes used to take down larger slower moving targets or protect these larger planes, why fighter planes are small the reason why bomber need escorts, even the famous B-17 with all their guns required escorts from smaller more agile planes or they would not get to or from their destinations without staggering losses.
