Ghost Stories was a 2000 paranormal anime series, originally produced by Aniplex/Animax. Animax had contacted ADV to create an English dub for the series that was loyal to the original script. However, the series turned out to be a major critical and financial failure upon release. ADV was still obligated to create a dub, but, desperate to recover financial gains, and understanding that the original script was a complete failure, Animax erased the original contract and gave them a new one with only four requirements:
1. Do not change the names of any character, including the ghosts.
2. Do not change the way any ghost is killed as it is based on Asian ghost legends.
3. Do not change the meaning of the episode.
4. Do whatever else you want to make the show successful.
And so, ADV turned the series into a self-parody, poking fun at instances of faulty logic, plot holes, and cliches, while dramatically changing almost all of the character's personalities, while still keeping the original plot intact. ADV's new, dark-comedy version turned out to be a hit, and the show took on a new personality and cult following.
Later, a new dub of the series was rereleased by Animax with less changes made to dialogue, but the ADV dub remains far more popular.
