Introduction to Uploading - The Uploading Process
Welcome on board! You are about to undertake one of Danbooru's most important missions - Uploading. Every last image on this site was uploaded by one of our members. Every day, our users work on a simple yet arduous process in getting new high-quality images into our collection, and keeping out the low-quality ones. Read on, and familiarize yourself with the Danbooru Uploading Process.
0. Read and Understand the Danbooru Quality Posting Guidelines.
This is very important: before you proceed, please read the guidelines for uploading new images. Our moderators are hard at work, fighting against a seemingly never-ending stream of trash, dodging copyright bullets on top of that, so let's do them a favor and make it easy for them!
To those that have read the Posting Guidelines, here is a short version for you:
- Respect copyright and comply with cease and desist orders. No banned artists.
- Post only anime-style or anime-related art.
- Post only high-quality images.
- Post efficiently compressed images. No large filesizes.
- Post only images with good anatomy and perspective.
- Understand that some material may make Danbooru moderators tick (furry, futanari, guro, scat, grotesque body parts).
- Post only other people's art. None of you own art. We are the complete opposite of Deviantart for this matter.
1. Prepare your images for upload.
Get your images ready for upload. Have all the images in neatly organized in an upload folder, or gather the URLs of the pictures you are going to upload. Images from some sites are subject to special procedures on Danbooru. For more information, consult the following pages:
2. Enter the path or URL into the Upload Screen.
The Upload screen is accessible from Posts. Click on Posts on the header, then on Upload.
If you are uploading an image from your computer:
- Type the full path to the image to be uploaded into the File field.
- Most of the time uploaders will use the Browse feature.
If you are uploading an image from another site:
- Type or paste the URL into the Source field.
Alternatively, if you are a frequent uploader:
- You may want to use the Bookmarklet
- Uploaders using Firefox as their browser may use DanbooruUp Firefox as a reward for Mozilla fandom.
- Updates are tracked from forum #22135.
3. Check if your image has been uploaded.
Click on 'Find Similar'. The image at hand has already been uploaded, you will get a high-ranking positive result, and the duplicates will be shown. Review the search results.
If a visually identical image has already been uploaded:
- Check the image that has been uploaded.
- Only upload if your image is of a higher quality, higher resolution or a more complete version.
- If your copy isn't, we thank you for your time. Move on to the next image, and start over.
- Set your post as the Parent of all existing variations of your upload. You may want to consult the instructions on how to do this.
4. Tag your image.
Describe your upload with tags. Enter your tags into the Tags field, separated by spaces.
Good uploaders know what they are uploading, so this should be a straightforward process. As a starting point, you should have tags for:
- Character
- Copyright
- Artist
- Hairstyle
- Eye Color
- Costume
If you are not sure that you have tagged your post comprehensively enough, add a tagme tag.
If the image contains text in languages other than English, which you do not understand, do us a favor and add a translation_request tag.
In the rare event you tried to find on Google, but failed:
- The artist: add an artist_request tag
- The character: add a character_request tag
- The associated copyrights: just leave a comment.
For more information, consult the Tagging Guide.
5. Check your tags!
Use the different Related tags features! This will help you check if your tags are correctly spelled. Tags that match existing tags already on Danbooru will be highlighted. This might also help you speed up your tagging process, by listing tags which are often found together.
6. Rate your post (sexual content only).
Please declare the amount of sexual content your upload has. This is for the wellbeing of users and moderators who wish to filter sexual from non-sexual content.
- If your post is completely prudish and has no sexual content whatsoever, give it a 'safe' rating.
- If your post is sexually suggestive, give a a 'questionable' rating.
- If your post explicitly depicts any kind of sexual activity, give it an 'explicit' rating.
Violence does not influence a rating on Danbooru. Comic violence (such as depictions of bloody fights) is tolerated, while extreme graphic violence (guro) should not be uploaded at all.
You may want to consult the Rating Guidelines for detailed procedures on rating posts.
6. Upload!
Once you have checked that your ratings and tags are in place, and that your image is good for upload, click on Upload, and your image will be placed in our Moderation Queue, and its thumbnails will have a blue border around it.
Users with the 'unrestricted uploads' permission bypass the moderation queue by default, adding their uploads directly to Danbooru's permanent collection.
7. Approval (Privileged/Builder and lower accounts)
If you uploaded a good post, your image will be approved, and no longer show a blue border. Congratulations, you have taken home some good booty!
If your upload isn't approved in three days, your post will be deleted. It might not have met our Quality Guidelines, or might have been on the Rejection Criteria. Don't take this too personally, and reconsider the possibilities that your upload was rejected. However, if you uploaded a good quality upload that was deleted, you are entitled to appeal your deletion.
