Tag discussion: namesake

Posted under General

I don't know if "pun" would cover namesakes, but I think "namesake" should be established as a tag for someone cosplaying as his namesake, two characters with the same name appearing together, or both. Of course, the kanji/kana in the namesakes' names may be different, but they don't matter when they are converted to romaji. Cases in point:

  • post #507656 - Kamen Rider DCD's Tsukasa cosplaying as Lucky Star's Tsukasa.
  • post #58297 - Two Haruhis merely appearing together.
  • post #51053 - Two Haruhis doing a costume switch.

Before I can add the tag to the relevant posts, I must first see what you think of it.

I think that's a good idea. It's a reason for several cosplay or crossover parody images, the same way seiyuu_joke is, so it would make sense as a tag to me.

Looks like it's OK for at least some of you, but it does make sense. I'll start applying this tag in a bit.

I don't think it's a subset of pun, but other than that this seems like a great idea.

Pun is intentionally referring to the wrong meaning with the correct word or vice-versa. Namesake is intentionally referring to the wrong person with the correct name or vice-versa. I say the latter is a category of the former alright.

From the current wiki:

Two or more characters sharing the same surname are not considered namesakes. This is because as in real life, two persons with the same surname may be mistaken as belonging to the same family at first glance of the names, regardless of whether this is true or not.

I kind of disagree with this. Characters in the same continuity that share surnames obviously shouldn't count since they tend to be related, but if they're from different stories like post #54532 and post #354442 then there is a clear joke just like the other namesakes and it should be counted (Haruka/Haruhi really should qualify anyway given their similar given names on top of the same surname). How else would this specific type of reference be tagged? Making up another tag seems like overkill and parody is very broad as it is.

Since it's the same intent it should count too I'd say.

I don't think that really counts as namesake. Namesake is very specifically about names. That's just a straight up parody.

But Suwako was most probably chosen for the Kero-chan pun.

EDIT: ↓that's why I simply tagged it as pun for now even though I think it deserves more.
