[Suggestion] Company tags: copyright -> artist

Posted under Tags

An idea I've been mulling over, but IMHO tags such as Capcom, Sega, Nintendo etc. should be ARTIST tags, not COPYRIGHT.

I'd prefer this for 2 reasons:

  • Official art rarely has the actual artist attached, but it was still created by the company (i.e. the artist is, essentially, the company)
  • The tags are currently abused by taggers (e.g. putting a Capcom tag on any old Street Fighter art). Changing the tags might get users to understand that it's erroneous.

Against. The xompany tags are often used for cases where the company is prominently featured in the picture (such as sega on picture with Sega logo, nintendo on picture with several nintendo consoles). At least make the redefinition clear on the wiki pages if change goes through. In any case, the artist tags are supposed to tell who drew the picture, not who created the thing in it. Besides, even with official_art, the artist is tagged if known.

Then we've got the whole deal with all the brand names that should be general tags instead of copyrights. disney I understand, sega is still ok, mitsubishi is just stupid.

That's what the company connection / crossover tags are for.

Maybe for the Nintendo example but IMO posts like post #785899 and post #1296106 should be and are tagged sega. For examples other than video game companies, to me post #1306865 with microsoft, post #1498094 for mcdonald's and post #828035 for gainax all are legitimate uses where company tags are used correctly without being official art.

I think company_connection should be tagged with the connecting company, but you probably have more say in this case than I do.

All these companies are likewise brands, so copyright tags feel more appropriate.

There's a difference between the treatment of different brands. According to howto:copyright only brands with recognizable characters are copyrights (e.g. McDonald's with Ronald McDonald, Microsoft with its Windows mascots) and brands of general objects are gentags. Sega is debatable because despite lots of Sega game characters and some, like Sonic, being closely associated, I don't think there are any characters associated with Sega brand itself. Same with Nintendo, except maybe Mr. Game and Watch or something. mitsubishi and firefox_(browser) etc. should be general unless there are specific characters for them I'm not aware of. Is it okay if I create a thread for changing these types of tags or would it be better for one of the higher-ups to do that?

Sorry for derailing. This thread is supposed to be about changing company tags (specifically, the copyright types) to artist tags. I already gave my opinion on it. I still oppose it.
