Quad turrets were a better technical solution than putting more turrets. They were lighter, and required less crew and protection weight than a 4 double-gun turret. Their complexity was what inhibited the japanese from bulding them (they found them unnecessary). The americans considered doing quadruple turrets of 14 inch for the North Carolina, before the escalator clause was used to upgunned them to 16 inch 3 triple-gun turrets.
