Tang yuan is a type of boiled dumpling made from glutinous rice flour. It’s mixed with a small amount of water and shaped into round balls (yuan) and cooked and in sweet or savory soup (tang), then served immediately in a bowl. They come in a wide variety of colors and fillings. The traditionally color is white and the most common fillings are sesame or sweet bean paste.
Tang yuan are eaten during Dongzhi festival, Yuanxiao festival and served as a dessert on any occasions such as wedding day, family reunion ect.
Trivia: These dumpling was called 元宵 (yuan xiao) in northern China. Its name was modified later because the emperor’s name was Yuan Shikai, and 元宵 sounded identical to 袁消 (remove Yuan).
